SELF

Unexpected, uncertain and emerging

The two words selfish and selfless stand bold in the tapestry to start a dialogue with oneself.

Whilst the architecture interlocks an array of programme with a considerable amount of intensity, the tapestry focuses on the undoing that is our human perception. Selflessness...selfishness...what lies between? The words imply a state of equilibrium for a building that wants to be two things at once.

The coloured pattern echoes the texture of the brick facade which encloses the spaces within. It becomes an interweaving of ideas, light and material yet extends far beyond the physical tapestry and into the realm of the intangible - the mind, the spirit and the soul. The tapestry is at home next to the oculus window, offering an opening into the unknown and the illusion of what could be. SELF is a backdrop to the Phoenix Art Gallery where visual and performing arts are in constant dialogue with one another.
